Mercedes Schlapp’s Fox News op-ed: Republican Latina playbook can help GOP win Hispanic voters in midterm elections Mercedes Schlapp’s Fox News op-ed: Republican Latina playbook can help GOP win Hispanic voters in midterm elections In a new column for FoxNews.com , CPAC Foundation Senior Fellow Mercedes Schlapp talks about the influence Republican Latinas have to lead conservative victories in the midterms. For too long, Republicans have pandered to Hispanics voters with promises of open borders and amnesty. Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush and John McCain advocated for comprehensive immigration reform that would incentivize unending waves of illegal immigration. In 2013, the Republican National Committee doubled down on the identity politics with an autopsy of the 2012 midterm elections that concluded the GOP could win only with a softened stance on immigration, after Republicans half-heartedly embraced stronger borders that election cycle. Times have changed as Hispanic Republican candidates, especially Latinas, are embracing President Donald Trump’s America First blueprint and executing their own law and order playbook. Rep. Mayra Flores, the first Mexican-born woman elected to Congress, and the first-ever Republican to represent the Rio Grande Valley, campaigned on liberating south Texas from the scourge of illegal immigration, human trafficking and criminal gangs. It only takes three minutes to let your legislators know that their score from the CPAC Foundation is important to you, and you expect them to support more conservative policies. Washington Rises in National Conservative Rankings CPAC Presents 40 Lawmakers Awards for Conservative Voting ALEXANDRIA, VA (August 1, 2022) — The voting of Washington’s Republican state lawmakers is trending more conservative according to a new analysis conducted by the Center for Legislative Accountability (CLA), a project of CPAC Foundation and the American Conservative Union Foundation. This year, 40 state lawmakers have earned awards from CPAC for voting with the conservative position at least 80% of the time, a significant increase compared to last year where just 23 lawmakers earned awards. Additionally, the work of Republicans to reject the increasingly radical agenda of Governor Jay Inslee raised the conservative rating of the legislature from 35% to 39%. This rating places Washington as the 34th ranked conservative legislature. CPAC analyzes the voting records of all 7,400 state lawmakers in America to determine the rankings. The conservative rating is calculated through CPAC’s scorecards and is based on lawmaker voting across 186 policy areas ranging from cultural and life issues to tax, fiscal, and regulatory policies. WASHINGTON SCORECARD (Web Version) WASHINGTON SCORECARD (PDF Version) The ratings have also been incorporated into CPAC’s new Lawmaker Comparison Tool which runs head-to-head comparisons on lawmaker’s strongest and weakest policy areas. The CLA is the first and only organization to annually publish individual ratings for all 8,000 federal and state lawmakers in America. - RIP, Energy Independence
RIP, Energy Independence RIP, Energy Independence On the opening day of 2020’s Republican National Convention in Charlotte, President Trump championed the remarkable achievement of American energy independence. “We have achieved American energy independence. We’re now #1 in the world by far. . . These phonies, they want to end everything we have done. . . We have done things nobody thought was possible, for example, the Keystone pipeline. . . Basically, [Democrats] want no fossil fuel whatsoever. No gas, no oil, no coal, no nothing,” he said. After years of dependence on the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), for half our oil, America has become largely independent. We now export as much oil as we import. Further, as of 2019, Saudi Arabia provided a mere 6% of our oil. If Joe Biden had his way, we would still be dependent on OPEC countries like Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela. In 1981, Joe Biden voted to nullify President Reagan’s plan that started us on the path to energy independence. Reagan’s plan to deregulate oil and natural gas prices survived despite Biden’s foolish vote. As a result, our oil imports dropped from 45% to 28%. Unfortunately, Biden did not learn from experience. In a debate with socialist Bernie Sanders in March of this year, he admitted—then backtracked the next day—that he would ban new fracking. Fracking, of course, is among the greatest innovations in oil drilling that contributes to the ongoing effort to achieve complete energy independence. In Biden’s America, it would be only a matter of time before we‘re back to relying on foreign producers to keep our economy moving. NEWS & RELEASES . - CPAC Statement on Georgia Secretary of State Raffensperger’s attempt implement the failed Ranked Choice Voting System.
CPAC Statement on Georgia Secretary of State Raffensperger’s attempt implement the failed Ranked Choice Voting System. CPAC Statement on Georgia Secretary of State Raffensperger’s attempt implement the failed Ranked Choice Voting System. Alexandria, VA — CPAC released the following statement on Georgia Secretary of State Raffensperger’s attempt implement the failed Ranked Choice Voting System. “Georgia’s legislature enhanced their election laws to make it easier to vote and harder to cheat. As a result, all elections this cycle saw high turnout for both parties. In his vain attempt to garner attention from the media and the socialist left, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is looking to disenfranchise voters by making it harder and more confusing to vote by seeking to change the Georgia voting system to Ranked Choice Voting (RCV). “Replacing a proven and effective voting system for no good reason other than to wield power over the people is disingenuous and wrong. “Ranked choice voting is wrought with issues . RCV is confusing to the average voter which leads to less voter participation, especially in off year or non-marquee races. RCV is a much more arduous process to tabulate delaying the final results for days and even weeks. “When all legal votes are counted and each voter is given one choice and one vote, our system works. Secretary Raffensperger is looking to take the place of former Congresswoman Liz Cheney as the “Republican” darling of the left. He should instead do his job by seeking ways to increase voter turnout, not suppress the vote by implementing an onerous process that only hurts the people he was elected to serve. “CPAC calls on Governor Brian Kemp and the Georgia legislature to reject Secretary Raffensperger’s attempt to upend Georgia’s successful election reforms by implementing the failed Ranked Choice Voting System.” ### NEWS & RELEASES . - ACU Foundation Releases Latest Scores of Minnesota State Legislature
ACU Foundation Releases Latest Scores of Minnesota State Legislature ACU Foundation Releases Latest Scores of Minnesota State Legislature The Minnesota State Legislature has gotten more conservative over the past year, according to the American Conservative Union Foundation’s annual ratings of state legislatures. The American Conservative Union Foundation conducts an annual, in-depth analysis to rate all 8,000 lawmakers in America, revealing their positions on a wide variety of issues directly affecting our communities and families. Republicans in Minnesota stood strong and opposed Governor Walz’s excessively harsh economic lockdown. These lawmakers were a vital voice for economic freedom and personal liberty in the midst of heavy-handed government policies from the governor’s office. The state’s overall score improved by four points from last year, with the Minnesota House of Representatives leading the way in conservative leadership . The Minnesota legislature is moving in the right direction, and we need your help to keep it that way. Check out the press release below with more details and please take action ! It only takes three minutes to let your legislators know that their score from the American Conservative Union Foundation is important to you, and you expect them to support more conservative policies. New Minnesota Legislature Rises in Conservative Rankings in New Analysis Alexandria, VA—New analysis from ACUF, the host of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), reveals that the Minnesota Legislature will rise in ACUF’s rankings of the nation’s Most Conservative Legislatures. The improvement in Minnesota’s performance is partly due to a majority of lawmakers who opposed Governor Tim Walz’s economic shutdowns and restrictions of individual liberties. Review the scorecard to see the ratings of all Minnesota state lawmakers and find out which votes ACUF (American Conservative Union Foundation) scored. “After more than a year of shuttering businesses and banning children from learning in the classroom, Governor Walz has suggested that ‘normalcy is on the horizon,’ without actually lifting the lion’s share of his edicts,” said ACU Chairman Matt Schlapp. “These vague and empty promises were never enough for conservatives of the Minnesota Legislature, who fought to restore individual liberties from the outset. We hope these lawmakers will apply this same tenacity to opposing the governor’s leftist spending proposals.” ACUF’s Ratings of Congress and Ratings of the States are initiatives of ACUF’s Center for Legislative Accountability (CLA). These ratings are designed to reflect how over 8,000 elected officials across the nation view the role of government while illustrating the differences between chambers of the legislature and revealing lawmakers’ positions on a wide variety of issues that directly affect citizens. ACU Foundation reviewed each piece of legislation voted on in both chambers of the legislature to produce average scores of each chamber as well as individual scores for each sitting member.
