Across Latin America and the Caribbean, the Chinese Communist Party is using infrastructure projects, state-owned companies, and government-backed financing to expand its influence throughout the Western Hemisphere. Airports, ports, energy projects, and telecommunications networks may look like ordinary investments, but they can give Beijing something far more valuable than a financial return: long-term economic and political influence. Juan Pablo Segura, the newly appointed Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, recently highlighted this problem, warning about the record of Chinese state-owned companies operating throughout the region. He pointed to projects in Ecuador, Peru, and Guyana where he said corners were cut, contracts were broken, governments were left with debt, and local environments suffered. Guyana provides a particularly important example. Chinese state-owned companies played a major role in the expansion of Cheddi Jagan International Airport. The project was originally expected to cost roughly $150 million and was financed largely through a loan from China’s Export-Import Bank. But the project faced delays, changes to the original plans, and disputes over the quality and completion of the work. The airport is not an isolated case. China has spent years expanding its economic presence throughout Latin America and the Caribbean through its Belt and Road Initiative. Chinese companies have become involved in ports, energy projects, telecommunications, transportation, and other critical infrastructure. These investments can provide countries with badly needed infrastructure, but they can also create long-term dependence on Beijing. That dependence is exactly what should concern Americans. The Chinese Communist Party does not approach these investments the same way a private American company would. China’s major state-owned enterprises operate within a system ultimately controlled by the Chinese government. When Beijing helps build a port, finance an energy project, or construct an airport, it is not simply making a business investment. It is building relationships that can increase China’s economic and political influence. This matters because the Western Hemisphere is strategically important to the United States. Countries throughout Latin America and the Caribbean are our neighbors, major trading partners, and important sources of food, energy, and critical minerals. American security is directly connected to the stability and independence of the region. Allowing the Chinese Communist Party to become the dominant economic partner throughout our own hemisphere would be a serious strategic mistake. This does not mean that Latin American and Caribbean countries should reject foreign investment. These nations need infrastructure, and they should have the freedom to choose who helps build it. The problem comes when Chinese state-backed financing becomes the easiest or only option available. The United States should offer a better alternative. American policy should encourage private investment, transparent financing, and partnerships that allow countries to develop without becoming dependent on Beijing. American companies can compete by offering reliable infrastructure and investment without the political strings and strategic ambitions associated with the Chinese Communist Party. The United States should also work more closely with allies throughout the hemisphere to expose the risks associated with Chinese state-owned companies. Countries deserve to know the full financial, environmental, and national security costs of major infrastructure agreements before signing them. China understands that influence does not always come from military bases or political speeches. Sometimes it comes through a construction contract. Beijing is using infrastructure to establish a long-term presence in America’s neighborhood. If the United States ignores that strategy, China will continue filling the vacuum. Defeating communism means more than confronting communist governments directly. It means preventing the Chinese Communist Party from building the economic dependencies that allow it to expand its power around the world. Americans should demand that our government take the Chinese threat in the Western Hemisphere seriously. China is already competing for influence in our hemisphere. America cannot afford to sit on the sidelines.

This week, The Diplomat ran a moving piece by the son of prisoners and Christian pastors in China, urgently asking the world for help securing their release. In the article, Gao Pu poignantly pleaded for help releasing his parents, Pastor Gao Quanfu and Pang Yu, elderly Christians detained during China’s crackdown on unregistered house churches. Gao, a minister for 40 years, faces a possible 12- to 13-year sentence on fraud charges tied to voluntary church donations. Yu was arrested weeks after Gao simply out of association. The couple are being held in overcrowded conditions with limited family and legal contact, inadequate food, and untreated health problems. Quanfu and Yu’s case reflects government pressure on churches that resist state surveillance and control. It is not unlike the case of Pastor Ezra Jin, who was similarly arrested and imprisoned in China for pastoring a Christian house church. After a long hard fight that included international pressure, including from CPAC and the CPAC Christian Persecution Coalition, Jin was finally freed. Jin’s case gives hope that Quanfu and Yu can be freed, but they are in need of warriors to do it. “Without a groundswell of international support, I fear that my parents will spend the rest of their lives in prison,” writes Pu. “I respectfully, but urgently, ask governments and policymakers around the world to stand in solidarity with my parents. To the consulates and embassies in the PRC: please show up at their trials in Xi’an, China.” “I cannot be there, so I plead with all those who can to attend. Bear witness and remind my parents that they are not alone,” he adds. Pu’s parents’ case is another example of the blatant and barbaric Christian persecution of the CCP and should serve as a call to action from Christians and freedom-loving people around the world to fight the CCP’s oppression. Dr. David Martin doesn't think the Fauci hearings failed by accident. In a recent appearance on The Jimmy Dore Show, Martin argued that years of congressional theater around Anthony Fauci, the viral clips, the raised voices, the made-for-C-SPAN showdowns, produced almost nothing of consequence, because the members asking the questions never once walked the witness through the documentary record of his own agency's funding decisions. Martin's example is Sen. Rand Paul, arguably the most aggressive Fauci critic in the Senate and the man conservatives have watched go toe-to-toe with him more than anyone else in Washington. In every one of those hearings, Martin said, the paperwork stayed off the table. The records in question concern gain-of-function research, the exact category of work at the center of every fight over COVID's origins, and the flow of NIAID money to coronavirus research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where Ralph Baric ran the lab. In October 2014, NIH announced a funding pause on precisely that kind of research. What happened to the UNC work around that pause, and how it was handled internally, is documented in material that has since been made public through FOIA releases and congressional investigation. "Everything I'm saying you can go and download right off of the internet," Martin said. If Martin is right, it's a devastating indictment of how Congress handles oversight. Not a cover-up by silence, but a cover-up by performance. The timeline nobody in Washington wants Martin's larger argument is that the entire COVID conversation has been fenced off inside a timeline that conveniently starts too late. "The issue is really simple," he told Dore, pointing to coronavirus research involving Baric at UNC Chapel Hill and federal funding that long predates the years Congress keeps circling. "2002 predates 2014." Washington's hearings have largely fixated on the mid-2010s: the funding pause, the EcoHealth Alliance grants, the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Martin says the American money and the American science go back much further, and that the people who wrote the checks have never been asked about it. "Why aren't we talking about DARPA? Why aren't we talking about UNC Chapel Hill?" "Not a single person took action" Martin insists none of this requires a leak or a whistleblower. That's the part that should sting most for anyone who lived through 2020 and 2021. Americans were locked down, masked up, shut out of their churches, pushed out of their jobs, and told their kids' schools would stay closed indefinitely — meanwhile, Martin claims, the underlying record was already public. "Before the shot was ever given, all of this data was available to Congress. All of this data was available to the White House, and not a single person took action," Martin said. These are Martin's claims, and Americans can pull the documents and judge them for themselves, which is precisely his point. But the broader indictment doesn't require accepting every one of his conclusions. Fauci ran an agency that steered billions of dollars in research funding. His recommendations reshaped daily life in every state in the country. He was treated for two years as though disagreeing with him were a form of scientific illiteracy, and the press ran interference for him the entire way. A man with that much power should be the easiest person in America to question. Instead, he got a preemptive pardon (dating back to January 2014) and a book tour. Dore asked Martin why more people aren't digging into any of this. "Nobody's willing to talk about the facts," Martin said. Five years, multiple hearings, and a public record nobody bothered to slide across the table. That's not an oversight failure. That's a choice.

For many Americans, communism feels like something confined to history books. According to a recent U.S. Department of State report, Cuba has remained one of its most influential promoters in the 21st century. Since Fidel Castro came to power in 1959, Cuba has worked to spread communist ideology beyond its borders. During the Cold War, that often meant supporting revolutionary groups with training, resources, and intelligence. The State Department argues that while those tactics have evolved, the goal has remained the same: expanding the influence of authoritarian governments and undermining democratic institutions. The report calls out Cuba's close relationships with countries like Venezuela and Nicaragua as evidence of that continued influence. Through intelligence cooperation, political advising, and ideological partnerships, Cuba has helped strengthen governments that have faced criticism for suppressing political opposition and limiting individual freedoms. While Cuba may not have the economic strength of countries like China, its influence throughout Latin America has often been greater than many people realize. In June, a 219 page report was published by the Rape Gang Inquiry, an independent, survivor-led initiative set up to uncover the full reality of organized child sexual exploitation networks across Great Britain. The Inquiry is led in day-to-day operations by survivor-turned-activist Sammy Woodhouse along with a panel of experts. It has stepped up where official institutions have failed for decades. Operating completely independent of the British government or any political party, the entire project was funded directly by public donations from citizens demanding answers. The team behind the inquiry gathered survivor testimonies, parent accounts, whistleblower reports, and many court documents to map out the systemic crimes across 149 of the 296 local authority districts in England, divisions that define the counties of the country. To make this data accessible to the public, they launched the Rape Gang Inquiry Hub, an open digital platform detailing the crime rings, trafficking operations, and cover-ups going on in Britain. By combining fresh survivor evidence with prior official findings–like the 2014 Jay Report on Rotherham and the 2022 Crowther Report on Telford, the inquiry delivered a new and all-encompassing look at how these networks operate in plain sight. There is no room for soft language, excuses, or leniency regarding the crimes committed; the actions of these rape gangs are pure evil. For years, these networks have targeted, groomed, and destroyed the lives of thousands of young girls, subjecting them to systematic statutory rape, sex trafficking, unlawful imprisonment, and the forced production and distribution of child sexual abuse material. Every single person involved in these networks- from the central ringleaders to the lower-tier "spotters," "runners," and "drivers" who locate and transport victims- should be apprehended, prosecuted, and put behind bars for the maximum sentence allowed by law. Just as infuriating as the crimes themselves is the apathy of the institutions meant to protect these children. Police departments, social services, and local councils received warning after warning, yet they repeatedly dismissed victims, silenced whistleblowers, and swept evidence under the rug to protect reputations and political narratives. That institutional silence made the state complicit in these horrible crimes. Accountability cannot stop at the rapists; anyone who looked the other way or helped cover up these crimes must face real consequences. The findings of the Rape Gang Inquiry should be a massive wake-up call for the entire Western world. When political convenience takes priority over protecting innocent children, the rule of law completely breaks down. Protecting our youth and backing law enforcement are non-negotiable foundations of any sane society. Exposing this truth is only the first step; the safety of our children requires complete transparency, total prosecution of the perpetrators, and long-overdue justice for every victim.
