The Colorado General Assembly is one of the nation’s most divided state legislatures, according to the American Conservative Union Foundation’s annual ratings of state legislatures. 

The American Conservative Union Foundation conducts an annual, in-depth analysis to rate all 8,000 lawmakers in America, revealing their positions on a wide variety of issues directly affecting our communities and families.

Over the past five years, Colorado has become home to some of the country’s most radical Democrats, and the General Assembly now reflects that political change in the state. Colorado’s General Assembly lurched further leftward in 2020, notching its worst-ever ACU rating at thirty-six percent. 

The ACU ratings data conclude that Colorado lawmakers have the most liberal voting records on personal liberty, labor issues, health care, and welfare.

Colorado General Assembly Ranks as One of the “Most Divided Legislatures,” According to New Analysis

Alexandria, VA—During the 2020 session, the Colorado General Assembly ranked as one of the nation’s most ideologically divided legislatures, according to new analysis by ACUF, the host of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). Early results from the 2020 analysis indicate Colorado will likely land the state in the Top 10 of ACUF’s Most Divided Legislatures in the country.

“Leftists of the Colorado General Assembly worsened the Biden Border Crisis by expanding welfare for illegal immigrants and restricting enforcement of federal immigration laws,” said ACU Chairman Matt Schlapp. “Conservative lawmakers tried to protect Colorado communities and block policies that encourage foreign nationals to break the law. We urge the General Assembly to reconsider these harmful policies that are exacerbating the humanitarian crisis at the border.”

ACUF’s Ratings of Congress and Ratings of the States are initiatives of ACUF’s Center for Legislative Accountability (CLA). These ratings are designed to reflect how over 8,000 elected officials across the nation view the role of government while illustrating the differences between chambers of the legislature and revealing lawmakers’ positions on a wide variety of issues that directly affect citizens.

ACU Foundation reviewed each piece of legislation voted on in both chambers of the legislature to produce average scores of each chamber as well as individual scores for each sitting member.
