An astonishing 60 percent of the California state legislature’s members now rank as radical leftists. Within the state’s far-left legislature, 73 lawmakers voted as socialist-supporting radicals.

The American Conservative Union Foundation conducts an annual, in-depth analysis to rate all 8,000 lawmakers in America, revealing their positions on a wide variety of issues directly affecting our communities and families.

Governor Gavin Newsom’s extremist agenda received a rubber stamp from the legislature over the past year. “It’s no wonder so many Californians were desperate to recall Governor Gavin Newsom when the issues he prioritizes are attacking private businesses, locking down the state, and restricting important constitutional rights,” said CPAC Chairman Matt Schlapp. “California is crumbling because of Governor Newsom’s leftist policies, and it’s only getting worse because a growing number of California lawmakers have become infatuated with socialism.”

Included in the roundup of radical bills that the legislature supported and Governor Newsom subsequently signed into law are the following: 

• (AB 2218) — This new law forces California’s taxpayers to fund sex-change operations and “therapeutic arts” for those who identify as transgender.

• (AB 685) — This sweeping new law permits OSHA to raid and shut down private businesses if OSHA believes the business exposes workers to risk of covid infection.

• (AB 860) — This dangerous law undermines voter integrity by requiring the state to send unsolicited mail-in ballots to all registered voters.

• (AB 2847) — With this law, the far-left legislature went so far as to undermine the Second Amendment by outlawing 496 styles of handguns.

• (AB 2405) — Demonstrating the legislature’s socialist priorities, this new law declares a “right to housing,” forcing taxpayers to commit $10 billion toward “free” housing.

Number of Radical Left Lawmakers Rises Under Governor Newsom’s Administration

ACUF Releases Analysis of Gov. Newsom’s Socialist Legislative Agenda

Alexandria, VA—California politicians are becoming more radicalized and leftist, according to new analysis from the American Conservative Union Foundation (ACUF), host of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).

ACUF analyzed the voting records of all 120 California state lawmakers and found that 73 lawmakers (or 60%) qualified as members of the “Coalition of the Radical Left” for opposing the conservative position on at least 90% of issues. The group of leftist lawmakers has grown since 2018, when the California Legislature included 71 lawmakers who qualified as leftists.

“It’s no wonder so many Californians were desperate to recall Governor Gavin Newsom when the issues he prioritizes are attacking private businesses, locking down the state, and restricting important constitutional rights,” said CPAC Chairman Matt Schlapp. “California is crumbling because of Governor Newsom’s leftist policies, and it’s only getting worse because a growing number of California lawmakers have become infatuated with socialism.”

The leftist lawmakers supported, and Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law, the following bills:

• (AB 2218) Force taxpayers to fund sex-change operations and “therapeutic arts” for those who identify as transgender.

• (AB 685) Permit OSHA to raid and shut down private businesses if OSHA believes the business exposes workers to risk of covid infection.

• (AB 860) Require the state to send unsolicited mail-in ballots to all registered voters.

One proposal that Newsom signed, known as ACA 5, was rejected by voters by a 57% majority when it reached the November 2020 ballot. ACA 5 would have permitted state government to discriminate in hiring and contracting on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, and national origin.
