- America Uncanceled: President Trump took a gamble in the Middle East
Mercedes Schlapp and KT McFarland, Former Deputy National Security Advisor of the United States under President Donald Trump and CPAC board member, had a conversation about President Trump’s recent trip to Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. They comment on how the President’s trip and early deals in the Middle East came with many risks that could pay off. Mercedes comments on how she was surprised by the announcement by President Trump to lift US sanctions on the new government of Syria, because of their precedent for being an unstable country. She says that it was a risk for the United States, but that it could pay off since Syria has the opportunity to further develop and take on ISIS. “I think a lot of people were surprised. It was a risk, as you point out. The new Syrian leader, even though he was against the murderous, thuggish dictator Bashar al-Assad, he is untested…President Trump is saying, ‘I am willing to give him a chance at a future, and it's up to them to take it.’”, responds McFarland. Syria, hopefully, will take the opportunity and follow Saudi Arabia’s example of modernizing its economy and combating extremism. The new leadership has the potential to diminish Russian and Chinese influence in the region and further isolate Iran. McFarland says that the Obama and Bush administrations essentially told foreign countries how to govern themselves, which led to further instability. She goes on to say Trump is changing the paradigm, especially in relation to Qatar, despite the criticism he has received for trying to broker a deal. “If you really do want peace, you have to talk to the other side…you will never get unconditional surrender”, says McFarland. McFarland highlights how President Trump seems to feel the tremendous responsibility he has to service men and women, says that he will not hesitate to use the military, but first values positive coercion through technological and economic investment. President Trump would rather protect America by offering economic partnerships. His peaceful solutions are in contrast to "neoconservatives," who attempt to dictate to other countries how to govern themselves, often involving military action that puts service men and women at risk.
- Leo Zacky: California's Anti-Business Policies Destroyed My Family's Farm
America Matters Host Leo Zacky, found on the Salem and Answer Network, Vice President of Zacky Farms, his family's poultry company, and a board member of the California Poultry Federation, spoke at CPAC 2025 in Washington, DC. California, according to Zacky, went from a conservative stronghold to being run by a “political cartel” that seeks to destroy the middle class and small businesses at the benefit of a corrupt political system. Zacky outlined his family's more than 90-year-old business being forced to relocate outside of California, not because of the government’s “mismanagement” or “incompetence”, as he puts it, but because of a deliberate strategy by a “political cartel” to destroy the middle class and small businesses. California, where President Ronald Reagan was governor and once a conservative stronghold, has been co-opted by a “political cartel”. A corrupt political system that only benefits this “political cartel” and their cronies at the detriment of the middle class and small businesses.
- What’s Hungarian for “We Won!”: Matt Schlapp, Balázs Orbán
CPAC Chairman Matt Schlapp hosted the acting Political Director of the Prime Minister of Hungary, Balázs Orbán, to a discussion at CPAC 2025 in Washington, DC. They speak about the liberal media’s subversive narrative of the leaders of their respective countries, the hypocrisy of liberal media, the dangers of mass illegal immigration, the war in Ukraine, and similarities in policy of President Trump and Prime Minister Orbán, and how Americans can “save the world”. Schlapp welcomed Orbán to America, and Orbán congratulated Schlapp and the audience for the overwhelming victory in the recent 2024 election. “I think you saved your country. And did a great thing to Europe and the World”, says Orbán. Schlaap begins the exciting talk with the question of how to say, “Trump won and you know it!” in Hungarian. Schlapp highlights how there have been four other CPAC conferences in Hungary, and Orbán invites the audience to the next conference, and that “Budapest is safe and sound”. They go on to compare US President Donald Trump and the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, and how the media, particularly the Washington Post, paints Órban as a “dictator” or a “fascist dictator” and that he “rigs elections”. Schlapp then highlights the irony because, according to the media, “you can’t rig elections, but now you can rig elections”. Orbán argues that the liberal media like to lie and that they subvert the information to fit whatever is convenient for their agenda. As Schlapp says, Viktor Orbán is the leader of Europe, and similarly to Donald Trump, Orbán argues, the leftists target them because they are “a threat to their power structures” and secondly because they stand up for “the truth”. Luckily, according to Orbán, if the truth is on your side, it is only a matter of time before their actions that were once heavily criticized by the leftists will turn out to be true. Issues such as mass migration, according to Orbán, which the leftist media lauds and attacks Trump and Viktor Orbán for opposing, only need time to show how the effects are negative. Orbán goes on to highlight how the people of Hungary gave the government a mandate to restrict illegal mass migration through referendum, despite the leftist media backlash. The war in Ukraine, which both Orbán and Trump have demonstrated a desire to end, Orbán added, has also been attacked by the media. Schlapps adds that President Joe Biden rejected the idea of communication between the United States and Russia, despite being contacted repeatedly by Russia for negotiations. Orbán is dumbfounded as to how President Trump has been criticized by the liberal media for communicating with Russia to end the war and stop the killing because, “how can you make peace if you are not making communication with the other side?”. If you say you are working for peace, pointing to Biden, but there is no active communication, argues Orbán, “he is a liar”. Schlapp then moves the conversation to comparing the similarities between President Trump and Prime Minister Orbán. Orbán goes on to say that both “love their countries” and that to genuinely love your country is a defining feature of a great leader. Schlapp highlights how both leaders are not from the establishment, and do not have many allies in the media or nonprofits, but both have had a lasting impact because they have established institutions and organizations across the media and organizations like CPAC that have been a great ally for the “truth”. Orbán adds to this, saying that Trump and Orbán are a force of healing because they “love their countries” and want them to prosper. Schlapp then agrees, highlighting how Trump and Orbán have, despite being attacked for it, supported happy families, the education of children, and the prosperity of their countries. He argues that the illegal immigration supported by the leftist media endangers the family and the safety of the country, highlighting America First policies. Orbán emphasizes the importance of “creating an environment which maintains freedom of decision for everyone but also that advocates policies: proper family policy, churches are not prosecuted, they are welcomed, and the ‘woke agenda’ is out of schools”. Orbán then welcomes the audience encouraging them to visit Hungary as it has “good food and is a conservative safe space” Schlapps then ends asking Orbán how his governments’ collaboration with America and CPAC can change the world. Orbán answers, “ my message is America is back…and don't count on the liberals you have friends all around the world and if you find your friends you can save Western civilization together”. - America Uncanceled: President Trump has ended the Forever Wars
President Donald Trump has “driven a stake” into the heart of interventionist Neocons’ policy of perpetuating forever wars, preferring economic alliances that are mutually advantageous. Recently on America UnCanceled , Mercedes Schlapp and KT McFarland, Former Deputy National Security Advisor of the United States under President Donald Trump and CPAC board member, had a conversation about President Trump’s recent trip to Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. Syria, hopefully, will take the opportunity and follow Saudi Arabia’s example of modernizing its economy and combating extremism. The new leadership has the potential to diminish Russian and Chinese influence in the region and further isolate Iran. McFarland adds that this effort by President Trump changes the precedent of interventionism set by “Neoconservatives”. Trump is willing to make a deal with Iran when the establishment interventionists, both on the left and the right, would consider it unthinkable. McFarland says that Trump wants to put America’s interests first and not drag America into “forever wars” that only cause chaos, but to promote peace and prosperity. During President Trump’s speech in Saudi Arabia, he says it is not America’s responsibility to “look into the souls” of foreign leaders: “In recent years, far too many American Presidents have been afflicted with the notion that it's our job to look into the souls of foreign leaders and use US policy to dispense justice for their sins…I believe it is God’s job to sit in judgment and my job to defend America and to promote the fundamental interests for stability, prosperity, and peace”, says President Trump. Mercedes says this is probably the most important line from his speech, which demonstrates that President Trump is America first, and he also wants prosperity and stability in the region. She believes the efforts of President Trump are profitable and creating stability in the region compared to President Obama’s trip to Egypt and the Arab Spring.
- America UnCanceled: President Trump is the Leader America Needed
President Trump’s trip to the Middle East is demonstrating that he commands respect and is able to complete profitable deals for the United States. This earned respect towards President Trump is in stark contrast to the Biden Administration, which spread instability across the world. Mercedes Schlapp and KT McFarland, Former Deputy National Security Advisor of the United States under President Donald Trump and CPAC board member, had a conversation on America UnCanceled about President Trump’s recent trip to Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. The trip, says McFarland, is a culmination of an ongoing effort from the early days of his first term. There was a question from the very first week of his first term of determining who the United States would support in the generational struggle for succession. President Trump had a decision to support the traditionalist older factions or the younger “forward-thinking” faction who support an “open society, diversified economy, and rights for women.” President Trump took the risk of supporting the younger generation in the dispute over succession. More particularly, the president supported the rule of Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman al Saud. The new Prime Minister, says McFarland, revolutionized the Saudi economy: “He [Mohammed bin Salman al Saud] really delivered on everything he promised to President Trump. Not only did he open up his society, not just for a petroleum-based society, but they looked to the future, they looked to technology, they looked to infrastructure development. And more importantly, he took a stand with the world against Islamic extremism.”

And more importantly, he took a stand with the world against Islamic extremism.” President Trump's current trip, McFarland goes on to say, to Saudi Arabia is a victory lap because, since the early deals in his first term, ISIS has lost significant power, and other Arab countries have followed Saudi Arabia in modernizing. “Not only do we have the Abraham Accords, but Saudi Arabia has fully modernized into the modern economy”, says McFarland. Saudi Arabia has been a great leader and example, bringing together younger generations that support peace in the Middle East, bringing better relations with Israel and Iran, and a new government in Syria. Mercedes comments on how she was surprised by the announcement by President Trump to lift US sanctions on the new government of Syria, because of their precedent for being an unstable country. Trump urges Russian President Putin to meet Ukrainian President Zelensky in Istanbul. “Putin is a fool if he doesn’t take all the olive branches President Trump has offered. President Trump is saying we can either do this the easy way or the hard way.”, says McFarland.
- Protect Victims: Sign Texas SB 1278
Last week, the Texas Senate passed Texas SB 1278, a bill that provides protections and an affirmative defense for victims of human trafficking. The bill is similar to other legislation CPAC has supported in Arkansas, Georgia, Oklahoma and at the federal level in Congress, offering criminal record relief to human trafficking victims who are coerced into committing crimes by their trafficker. Many trafficking victims, while under the influence of their trafficker, are forced into horrible acts they would not otherwise commit. They are then left with a criminal record, jail time, and without the means to return to normal life after the justice system fails them. As a result, traffickers take advantage of these policies to ensure their victims are stuck in a cycle of crime while often coping with trauma, all of which, inhibit their ability to leave the influence of their trafficker and pursue a free and better life. Texas SB 1278 seeks to protect trafficking victims by amending the Penal Code with the introduction of Section 8.09 which allows human trafficking victims to give evidence that their actions were a result of exploitation. The Bill will also add greater nuance by accounting for impeding factors such as coercion, duress, or threats to themselves or loved ones. Victims will have the opportunity to be alleviated of legal penalties when they would otherwise have been convicted. This amendment to the Penal Code protects victims and highlights their exploitation, turning focus on their perpetrators. The bill is quickly moving through the Texas legislature and is now just one step away from becoming law and changing the lives of trafficking victims for the better. CPAC urges Texas Governor Greg Abbott to get this key legislation across the finish line and sign Texas SB 1278 into law so that the rule of law may be upheld and victims protected – so law enforcement can focus their resource and tools on the criminal traffickers who deserve a life behind bars.
- Edan Alexander thanks President Trump for helping him to be released from Hamas
Ben Shapiro, the host of the Ben Shapiro Show , reflects on the release of Edan Alexander, the last American hostage to be released from Hamas. Shapiro thanks President Trump for helping to broker the hostage release through Steve Whitkoff, the United States Special Envoy to the Middle East. Shapiro says that he introduced the family to President Trump. Shapiro shares a video capturing the moment Edan is reunited with his family. It is reported that Edan was tortured and kept in an inhumane environment as a hostage of Hamas, according to Shapiro. He says that Edan’s and other hostages' treatment is proof that Hamas should not have a role in the governance of the Gaza Strip now or after the end of the conflict. Edan was seen holding a sign thanking President Trump for helping to broker his release.
- Pope Leo XIV: Blessing to Journalists
The newly elected Pope Leo XIV blessed journalists at an audience on Monday and stressed their crucial role in pursuing human peace and prosperity. The Pope received a standing ovation from the audience of journalists as he entered the Vatican auditorium. This was his first meeting with the public, highlighting the importance he places on journalism. Mercedes Schlapp and Dr Chad Pecknold, an Associate Professor of Historical and Systematic Theology at The Catholic University of America, had a conversation on America UnCanceled where they discussed the blessing of journalists by the new Pope. The official Papal blessing came as a shock to many journalists in the audience, as the late Pope Francis avoided the blessing seemingly to accommodate other faiths or the unbelieving. “He blessed the journalists in Rome, gave them a Christian blessing, remember Francis avoided giving a Christian blessing lest he offend the ‘pagan journalists.’ But this Pope [Leo XIV] gave a proper Christian blessing to the journalists and I think he is right to say, these journalists actually are important for human flourishing, they are important for human peace and they need to tell the truth.”, says Dr Pecknold. Although journalists may not agree with the Doctrines of the Church and Pope Leo XIV, he still made the effort to bless the journalists and said that what they are doing is also important and meaningful. The important role journalists have comes with the responsibility of fair and honest reporting: “Even before he was Pope, as Cardinal Prevost, he was always interested in the problem of spectacle in media. What Donald Trump calls ‘fake news.’ The kind of thing that blows up but doesn’t really have any basis in reality. I think, as Pope Leo XIV, he's going to attack the idea of fake news. And ask journalists to pay attention to what's real.”, says Dr Pecknold.
- America UnCanceled: Mercedes Schlapp & Dr. Chad Pecknold
Mercedes Schlapp and Dr. Chad Pecknold, an Associate Professor of Historical and Systematic Theology at The Catholic University of America, have a conversation on America UnCanceled . They discuss the recent election of Pope Leo XIV, formerly known as Cardinal Prevost, last week, May 8th, 2025, and what his election means for Catholics and the traditions of the Church. They reflect on the New Pope’s background as the first North American Pope in the Church’s history, being a Chicago native, and his missionary work in Peru. Dr. Pecknold starts by highlighting how then Cardinal Prevost was not considered to be a top candidate at the beginning of the Conclave. He emphasizes that any reasons for his being elected are purely speculative because of the secrecy of the Conclave process. Cardinal Erdo and Cardinal Perolin were considered to be some of the front runners going into the Conclave, he postulates. The Cardinals, he speculates, wanted to have a “fresh page” after Pope Francis’ Pontificate. Cardinal Perolin was the Secretary of State under Pope Francis, so he was considered the natural front runner. “Whether you were enthusiastic about Francis’ Pontificate or you weren’t so enthusiastic about Francis’ Pontificate, I think all the Cardinals understood that it was a unique Papacy that the Church needed to turn the page on.” Mercedes comments on how Cardinal Prevost’s former role in the Vatican Dicastery for Bishops and Prior General of the Augustian Order made him someone familiar with the Vatican, but his personality seems reserved and would be a strong, quiet leader. Dr. Pecknold agrees, saying that although this is speculation, there definitely was a desire for a Cardinal who didn’t want to be Pope but whom everybody was already familiar with, and seen as an “honest broker, who could talk to anybody”. Cardinal Prevost was seen as a figure of unity and wouldn’t play into the dialectic of being purely a liberal or conservative. He highlights how his choice of wearing traditional vestments when he first appeared on the balcony in St. Peter’s Basilica after being elected was a return to the precedent set by Popes like St. Pope John Paul II or Pope Benedict XVI. From the beginning, Prevost demonstrated that he would not simply be a continuation of the precedent of Francis, who changed the tradition, not wearing the vestments when he was elected in 2013. “He [Pope Leo XIV] intentionally desires a continuity with Francis’ Pontificate that doesn’t spell discontinuity with the tradition.”, says Dr. Pecknold. Mercedes then asks about his choice of the name “Leo” and what that means for the direction of the new Pontificate. She comments on how there has been division and confusion in the Church after Pope Francis’s Pontificate. She asks if the choice of the name is a call for unity. Pope Leo XIV commented on Pope Leo XIII and his role in warning of the dangers of the Industrial Revolution, says Dr. Pecknold. Pope Leo the Great is also another Pope with the name of “Leo” and was the first Augustinian Pope, which would fit with Pope Leo XIV’s former role as Prior General of the Augustinian Order. “He was the first Pope to bring the teachings of St. Augustine into the Magisterium”, says Dr. Pecknold. Pope Leo III was the Pope who crowned King Charlemagne of France, so that could be a nod to Pope Leo XIV wanting to be “a friend to statemen,” again, he adds. Mercedes builds on the comment of Pope Leo XIV wanting to build bridges between states, similar to Pope Leo the Great. Pope Leo XIV, during his first Regina Coeli Angelus address, “I carry in my heart the sufferings of the beloved Ukrainian People. Let everything be done to achieve genuine, just, and lasting peace as soon as possible. May all prisoners and children be freed, may they return to their families…”. She says this address shows how Pope Leo XIV will lead the Church and how he can work with leaders like President Donald Trump, who similarly is pursuing peace in Ukraine and Gaza. Dr. Pecknold notes how the first words spoken by Pope Leo XIV were, “Peace be with you.” He is optimistic about the future because President Donald Trump of the most powerful country in the World and now the new leader of the Holy See wants peace. “Both the American president and the American Pope both converging on the same aim.” Mercedes then leads the conversation to artificial intelligence and how the Pope will be involved in navigating the “second Industrial Revolution”, alluding to Pope Leo XIII. Dr. Pecknold comments on how, as Cardinal Prevost, he warned of the dangers of “spectacle” in the media that distorts reality. Pope Leo XIV blessed journalists at an audience and stressed their importance for human peace and prosperity. Although journalists may not agree with the Doctrines of the Church and Pope Leo XIV, he still made the effort to bless the journalists and said that what they are doing is also important and meaningful. Dr. Pecknold comments on how the Pope’s decision to return to the Papal Palace is a return to tradition and that his not wanting to break this tradition is a form of humility. Mercedes shows the comedic video of the Pope’s brother, Luis, missing his call during an interview, and the Pope’s first words being, “Why didn’t you call?” She asks what the Pope’s down-to-earth American background could mean for the Catholic Church in America. And if the Pope will visit? “It’s delightful for Americans to think that there's an American in the Vatican. Especially after so many years thinking that the Pope is something foreign to us, but he's not something foreign to us.”, responds Dr. Pecknold. Mercedes then asks how the relationship between the White House and the Vatican will change. Dr Pecknold says that he texted a friend who was at the Vatican after the election said that “Cardinal Prevost is a very nice chap.” “Pope Leo XIV will be on good terms with all statesmen, including the President of the United States,” he says.
- America UnCanceled: Mercedes Schlapp & Anne Funder
Mercedes Schlapp and Anne Funder, who is an “angel mom”, had a conversation on America UnCanceled . Anne lost her son Weston to fentanyl in 2022, who was a 15-year-old freshman in high school. Anne is committed to bringing awareness to the dangers of fentanyl. Mercedes highlighted how over 73,000 Americans died of fentanyl related overdoses in 2022. The issue of fentanyl has, according to Mercedes, “decimated communities and destroyed families”. Anne explains how these fentanyl related deaths are a direct result of destructive border policies. Weston, her son, she adds, grew up in a normal family environment in California, going to Dana Hills High School. Weston had been prescribed Percocet by his doctor, but Anne didn’t want him to take it, so he decided to find other ways to get the drug. The drug he found, Anne adds, wasn’t Percocet at all but merely powder mixed with fentanyl. Anne says Weston was her first child of four and “taught her how to love.” That is why she is so enthusiastic about bringing awareness to the dangers of fentanyl. Anne explains how her faith was affected by being feeling alienated from God and that she felt abandoned. She, however, was asked to speak at the Republican National Convention and felt a renewed sense of faith and purpose because spreading awareness about the dangers of fentanyl would help other families and save lives. Anne stresses that “this can happen to you, we were the all-American family, we had a beautiful life”, and that parents need to communicate with their children about peer pressure and the dangers of drugs. She blames the Biden Administration and California Governor Gavin Newsom for the rampant influx of fentanyl over the southern border, “ we need to work on this country, we can't just allow people to pour over our borders and we can’t allow the cartels to ‘run a muck’, that we can’t allow China to ship whatever they want to our country and to the cartels that are going to bring it over our borders, it was dangerous what was happening over the past four years. I think that if President Trump were still in office that my son would probably still be alive because in under 100 days, he has gotten everything under control”. Mercedes then highlights the Trump Administration’s commitment to reducing illegal migration, “first 100 days, 150,000 arrested under President Trump, 135,000 deported, they are working day in and day out over at the Department of Justice to stop the fentanyl from coming into this country. So efforts are definitely being made to stop the fentanyl from coming in”. Mercedes and Anne stress that America is headed in the right direction under the Trump Administration and that stopping illegal drugs and saving lives should be a cause for bipartisan support. Many Democrats, such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D), have instead given direction to illegal immigrants on how to resist searches and how to avoid warrants. Anne says that, “instead they [Democrats] themselves should be investigated…I don’t see her [Ocasio-Cortez] protecting Americans”. Anne then highlights how past Democratic administrations, such as the Clinton or Obama administrations, deported millions of illegal immigrants, and that there is nothing wrong with protecting Americans.
