In a recent appearance on The Right Squad, CPAC Chairman Matt Schlapp questioned the origins of the narrative that President Donald Trump colluded with Russia to interfere in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Schlapp alleged that former President Barack Obama and then-Vice President Joe Biden were directly involved in constructing what he described as an "unfounded hoax" aimed at undermining Trump's legitimacy.
Schlapp pointed to reports that Obama was briefed daily during the 2016 election cycle with intelligence indicating that Russia was not interfering in the election, contrary to claims propagated by liberal media outlets at the time. These media narratives accused Trump of leveraging Russian support to sway the election in his favor. According to Schlapp, the accusations were baseless and centered on exaggerated claims about Russian influence through Facebook ads and social media campaigns.
Schlapp criticized Republicans for failing to hold Obama and Biden accountable, instead focusing their scrutiny on figures like former CIA Director John Brennan and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper. "The big mistake we always make, as a partisan, as a Republican, is we always take Obama and Biden and cut them slack," Schlapp said. "It’s Barack Obama in the Oval Office who constructed all of this with Joe Biden sitting there."
