CPAC's America vs. Socialism Campaign Defends American Values Ahead of Midterm Elections

Socialism is back on the ballot.

Across the country, Democratic candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America are pushing ideas that would move power away from families, workers, and entrepreneurs and place more control in the hands of government. CPAC’s America vs. Socialism campaign exists to draw a line: America works because freedom works.

This is not just a debate about slogans. It is a debate about who gets to decide: the people or the state. Property rights, prices, taxes, entrepreneurship, and liberty are not dry policy terms. They are the difference between owning your future and waiting in line for permission.

History has already run this experiment. The Soviet Union replaced free markets with central planning, which produced shortages, inefficiency, and political oppression. Cuba promised security and delivered decades of restrictions and poverty. Venezuela turned oil wealth into economic collapse through price controls, nationalization, and mismanagement. Poland tells the other side of the story: after 1989, it broke free from Soviet communist rule and ran toward democracy and free markets, showing how freedom can restore opportunity even after years of state control.

Freedom Builds. Socialism Destroys.

America’s strength comes from people being free to build, invest, work, risk, fail, try again, and succeed. A free market economy rewards initiative. It lets prices signal what people need, lets ownership create responsibility, and lets entrepreneurs turn ideas into jobs.

Socialism moves in the opposite direction. It replaces ownership with dependency, competition with bureaucracy, and opportunity with control. When government dictates prices, businesses cannot produce what consumers need. When government weakens property rights, investment dries up. When taxes climb and regulations multiply, small businesses pay the price first.

America rewards freedom, ownership, innovation, and opportunity. Socialism concentrates economic power in the state, weakens incentives, and too often leads to scarcity, dependency, and limits on political liberty.

The Issues That Matter

Start with property rights. If you cannot own it, build it, sell it, or pass it on, freedom is already on defense. Private ownership gives people a stake in their future; state control makes citizens dependent on politicians and planners. 

Prices matter too. In a free economy, prices tell the truth about supply, demand, scarcity, and value. Under price ceilings and controls, the truth gets buried, shelves get empty, and black markets grow.  

Taxes matter because every dollar taken from a family or business is a dollar that cannot be saved, invested, hired, or used to grow. 

Entrepreneurship matters because new businesses are the engine of opportunity, and liberty matters because economic freedom and political freedom rise or fall together.

The Warning Signs Are Global

The Soviet Union showed what happens when central planners try to replace the decisions of millions of people with orders from the top. Cuba showed how a state-controlled economy can trap generations in limited opportunity. Venezuela showed how price controls, nationalization, currency chaos, and institutional decline can crush a once-prosperous country. Poland showed the power of turning away from central planning and opening the door to free markets, ownership, and enterprise.
