Cuba: The Capital of 21st Century Communism

For many Americans, communism feels like something confined to history books. The Soviet Union collapsed more than 30 years ago, and the Cold War has long since ended, but while the Soviet Union disappeared, communist ideology did not. According to a recent U.S. Department of State report, Cuba has remained one of its most influential promoters in the 21st century.

Since Fidel Castro came to power in 1959, Cuba has worked to spread communist ideology beyond its borders. During the Cold War, that often meant supporting revolutionary groups with training, resources, and intelligence. The State Department argues that while those tactics have evolved, the goal has remained the same: expanding the influence of authoritarian governments and undermining democratic institutions.

The report calls out Cuba's close relationships with countries like Venezuela and Nicaragua as evidence of that continued influence. Through intelligence cooperation, political advising, and ideological partnerships, Cuba has helped strengthen governments that have faced criticism for suppressing political opposition and limiting individual freedoms. While Cuba may not have the economic strength of countries like China, its influence throughout Latin America has often been greater than many people realize. 

Perhaps the most telling example of communism's failures is Cuba itself. Political dissent is heavily restricted, independent journalists face harassment, and free elections remain out of reach for the Cuban people. These are reminders that communist governments often place the survival of the regime above the freedoms of the individual.

China, North Korea, and other authoritarian governments deserve the strong criticism they receive, but Cuba's role in the Western Hemisphere should not be ignored. As the State Department report points out, Havana has spent decades serving as a hub for communist ideology and authoritarian cooperation in the Americas. Understanding that history helps explain why the Cuban regime continues to matter, especially in today's geopolitical landscape.

Freedom is never guaranteed. It must be defended by recognizing threats to democratic values and standing with those who continue to fight for liberty around the world. Whether in Eastern Europe, Asia, or our own hemisphere, the struggle between freedom and authoritarianism is far from over.
