The CPAC 2024 Scorecard for Georgia reveals a strong performance by Republicans, who averaged an 85% alignment with CPAC’s conservative principles, surpassing their 2023 score of 83% and outperforming their Democratic counterparts with a dismal average of 15%. The scorecard highlights Republican efforts to tackle pressing issues that matter to Georgians like election security, school choice, and judicial overreach during the 2024 Regular Session.
Strengthening Election Integrity
Following the contentious 2020 election, which sparked widespread skepticism about the integrity of the voting process, the state emerged as a focal point in the national push for ensuring election integrity. Republican legislators have responded decisively, passing measures to safeguard future elections. Senate Bill 189 enhances ballot security by mandating that text portions of ballots be counted for vote tabulation and allowing citizens to challenge potentially fraudulent ballots. Senate Bill 368 strengthens campaign finance transparency to block foreign influence in Georgia’s elections, while Senate Bill 355 prohibits the use of ranked-choice voting, reinforcing straightforward electoral processes.
Curbing Politically Motivated Judicial Oversight
Georgia Republicans addressed concerns over judicial overreach, particularly in response to the politically motivated prosecution of former President Donald Trump by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. Senate Bill 332 was passed to reinstate the Prosecuting Attorneys Qualifications Commission, empowering the state to oversee and curb rogue district attorneys, ensuring they serve the public’s interests.
Ensuring School Choice for Families
Georgia joined a nationwide wave of school choice initiatives with the passage of Senate Bill 233, the Georgia Promise Scholarship Act. This legislation establishes “Promise Scholarship” accounts, enabling parents to use allocated funds for tuition at schools of their choice. However, the program’s reach is limited, with eligibility restricted to select families and funding capped at 1% of public school spending. Georgia lawmakers must remove the funding cap, which would expand access to all families and amplify the program’s impact.
Maintaining Conservative Unity
Georgia Republicans demonstrated party cohesion in the 2024 legislative session, with the majority of their state lawmakers earning recognition for their voting records. 30 out of 33 Republican State Senators and 90 out of 101 Republican House Members received awards for their consistent alignment with conservative values. This strong showing underscores the Georgia Republicans’ tendency to vote as a unified bloc on key issues.
Georgia Republicans have demonstrated a commitment to conservative priorities, earning high praise from CPAC. As debates over election integrity, judicial oversight, and educational freedom continue, the state remains a key battleground for shaping conservative policy nationwide.
