Why Mamdani's NYC Public Housing Proposal Will Fail: The Ben Shapiro Show

After New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced this week that he would no longer continue his reelection bid, it is becoming more of a reality that the city will have its first openly socialist Mayor: Zohran Mamdani. Ben Shapiro details how Mamdani's proposals are radical and will destroy NYC. One of Mamdani's most controversial policy proposals is to buy privately held property and convert it into public housing with the aim of combating homelessness and assisting those who cannot afford housing. Shapiro points out that public housing projects do not have a strong track record, usually ending in disaster for the city and its residents, adding to the cycle of poverty by driving out working-class families and exacerbating the problems faced by low-income neighborhoods.

Shapiro cites examples of public housing turning into "slums", people abusing their free housing with no incentive to improve their situation or maintain the property. These projects, according to Shapro, only bring misery to their cities and the residents therein. Public housing is not a good idea because of historic, "chronic underfunding and federal disinvestment with authorities putting the projects in already impoverished and racially segregated neighborhoods, worsening poverty and social isolation," argued Shapiro.

Shapiro outlines how public housing targets working-class families that are already struggling to improve their situation: "Strict eligibility rules evicted families that saw even modest financial improvement, concentrating the poorest and most vulnerable populations together while driving out stable working-class tenants."
