CPAC Releases South Dakota Legislative Scorecard, Exposing a Republican Legislature that Struggles to Pass Even the Mildest of Conservative Policies.

ALEXANDRIA, VA (January 18, 2024) — CPAC Foundation’s latest analysis reveals that South Dakotan Republicans fail to stick together on votes for conservative legislation, resulting in an average score around 73% across both chambers. Overall, Democrat averages remained around their lifetime average of 35%.

“South Dakota’s legislators passed up opportunities to protect kids from radical gender ideology in schools, defeated reforms of the growing welfare state, and failed to pass other conservative priorities this past session," said CPAC Chairman Matt Schlapp. “Among red states, South Dakota’s Republicans appear to be ‘asleep at the wheel.’”

CPAC recognizes several South Dakota state legislators recognized by CPAC for their conservative voting records. The following members of the South Dakota State Legislature earned CPAC’s Award for Conservative Excellence for voting with the conservative position at least 90% of the time during the 2023 session.

Senate:

Julie Frye-Mueller (100%)

Tom Pischke (100%)

Brent Hoffman (92%)

Jim Stalzer (91%)

House:

Aaron Aylward (100%)

Phil Jensen (100%)

Karla Lems (100%)

Tina Mulally (100%)

Tony Randolph (100%)

John Sjaarda (100%)

Ben Krohmer (92%)

Additionally, several lawmakers in the South Dakota State Legislature earned CPAC’s Award for Conservative Achievement for voting with the conservative position at least 80% of the time during the 2023 session. Their names are highlighted in gray on the scorecard.

The bills featured in CPAC’s 2023 Ratings of South Dakota address government spending, parental rights in education, and national security. These issues, coupled with our mission to protect life, liberty, property and uphold the American family, created the basis by which the CPAC Foundation rated the South Dakota legislature.

The Center for Legislative Accountability (CLA), an initiative of the CPAC Foundation, is the premier organization for holding lawmakers accountable. The CLA produces the longest-running conservative congressional scorecard and our state program is the only one in the nation that scores all 8,000 lawmakers in the 50 states across every policy area.
