On Monday, President Donald Trump announced that his Administration will be taking control of the Washington, DC Metropolitan Police Department to ensure proper law enforcement amidst a massive uptick in violent crime. This decision follows widespread incidents of killings, carjackings, uncleanliness, and homeless encampments that have tarnished the image of our nation, as the capital represents the country as a whole. Judge Andrew Napolitano, Newsmax Senior Judicial Analyst, addresses the criticism from DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and the liberal media against Trump’s action, emphasizing that the President has the authority to use federal entities to enforce laws in the federal district under Section 740 of the DC Home Rule Act.
While the government and courts remain under Congress's jurisdiction, the DC Home Rule Act grants President Trump the authority to tackle the ongoing crisis in DC by taking control of the police department. Besides the DC police, President Trump has brought in personnel from the National Guard, DHS, and FBI to address the ongoing issue of rampant violent crime. Napolitano stated that, unlike in California, where President Trump deployed the National Guard and military to manage the violent LA riots and protect federal assets, liberals have no grounds for debate, as DC is directly controlled by the federal government. Therefore, the President has every right to enforce laws and address issues that the incompetent liberal mayor cannot manage effectively.
